The World Health Organization (WHO) has assured that almost 1 billion doses of leading Covid-19 vaccine candidates have been secured as part of its 'COVAX' programme to provide vaccines for low and middle-income countries.
At a Geneva press conference, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that 189 countries were participating in the programme.
WHO expects to make decisions on whether to give emergency use approval to vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca in the coming weeks.
The approval could allow a vaccine to be available in some countries where national medical regulators are yet to evaluate it.

The discharge rate of coronavirus patients in the state improved to 93.70 per cent after 2,951 recoveries were registered on Thursday.
Fifteen more people succumbed to COVID-19 in Rajasthan, bringing the death toll to 2,500 on Thursday, while 1,592 fresh cases raised the infection count to 2,87,219 in the state, according to an official report.
