In a bid to enhance user experience and bolster security measures, Sony Interactive Entertainment has introduced a more secure alternative to traditional passwords within its PlayStation community. This new feature, named 'passkeys,' aims to streamline access while fortifying account protection against potential breaches.

Passkeys, termed as digital credentials generated via cryptographic means, offer users a unique and secure means to access online services without relying on conventional passwords. This innovative method enables individuals to utilise familiar device unlocking techniques such as fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or PIN entry via their mobile devices or computers.

Aligned with the standards set by the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, of which Sony Group is a proud member, passkeys boast robust security features resistant to phishing attempts. The FIDO Alliance, a global authority on authentication standards, endeavours to reduce dependence on passwords by advocating for advanced authentication standards across diverse devices and platforms.

In collaboration with prominent tech companies and institutions, Sony has ensured broad compatibility of passkeys with leading platforms and devices, promising a significantly enhanced sign-in experience for users.

Setting up a passkey on PlayStation Network (PSN) is straightforward:

  1. Access Account Management.

  2. Navigate to Security and enable "Sign in with Passkey."

  3. Select "Create a Passkey" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Upon successful creation, users receive a confirmation email and can subsequently employ the passkey for PSN sign-ins. Passkeys are also compatible with other Sony services linked to the same account.

For users eager to adopt passkeys, the process is as follows:

  1. On PlayStation consoles or connected devices, access the sign-in screen.

  2. Follow prompts to utilise the saved passkey for sign-in.

  3. Passkeys are supported on most iOS 16+ or Android 9+ mobile devices.

  4. Avoid using a PIN code as a passkey on Android.

  5. When signing in via web browsers, ensure usage of the latest Safari, Chrome, or Edge versions.

For those already using passkeys and wishing to add more, the steps are:

  1. Log in to Account Management.

  2. Navigate to Security and select "Manage Passkeys."

  3. Choose "Create a Passkey" and proceed with setup instructions.

Additionally, users can revert to password-based sign-ins by:

  1. Accessing Account Management.

  2. Navigating to Security and disabling "Sign in with Passkey."

  3. Creating a password for PSN sign-in.

With passkeys, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues its commitment to fostering a secure and seamless gaming environment for its global community.
