What Is DBSE?

In 2021, the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) was established with the aim of enhancing education in Delhi. As part of its efforts to promote advanced learning for senior secondary classes, the Delhi government set up 20 schools of specialised excellence in four different fields. These fields include STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), Humanities, Performing and Visual Arts, and High-End 21st Century Skills.

Additionally, in the same year, the Delhi government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Baccalaureate (IB). This partnership aimed to align the curriculum and assessment process of the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) with international standards set by the IB. By collaborating with the IB, the DBSE sought to enhance the quality of education by incorporating globally recognized practices and benchmarks.

Examinations

DBSE is the state-level education board of education in Delhi. DBSE conducts class 10, 12 board exams for 20 schools of specialised excellence in four fields: STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), Humanities, Performing and Visual Arts, and High-End 21st Century Skills.

The CBSE board conducts class 10, 12 examinations across the country. Science, Commerce, and Arts are the main streams.

The CISCE Board conducts ICSE or Class 10 and ISC or Class 12 examinations every year. CISCE offers three streams for Class 12 students: Humanities, Science, and Commerce.

State boards across the country conduct class 10, 12 exams every year. State Board generally offers Science, Arts and Commerce streams.

Syllabus And Approach

The DBSE advocates for a new assessment system that enables students' holistic development. It aims to shift the focus of assessment and prepare students for future challenges in a stress-free environment.

The syllabus, in a nutshell, covers all the essential topics suitable for the students' age group. The primary emphasis is on acquiring textual knowledge, particularly in subjects like mathematics and science. The prescribed books are sourced from NCERT. The overall approach aims to ensure content relevance and adequately prepare students for national-level entrance examinations.

The syllabus of the CISCE board bears a close resemblance to that of CBSE, albeit in a more comprehensive and elaborate format. It places greater emphasis on language proficiency while also fostering practical and analytical skills in students, distinguishing it from the CBSE board.

The curriculum implemented is concise and pertinent, with an emphasis on acquainting students with their local and state heritage. Different schools adopt either NCERT books or those recommended by the state government.

Notable points

The academic year of DBSE is divided into two terms, with assessments and reporting based on score points in subject-specific criteria. Each subject has its unique assessment criteria, which encompass an understanding of the subject, investigative techniques, and communication skills. Students are presented with case studies related to the chapters and are expected to provide solutions accordingly.

The syllabus of the board is designed to prepare students for both national and state-level entrance examinations. Its widespread presence and recognition make it relatively easier for students to switch schools, providing them with flexibility in their educational journey. This enables students to adapt to new environments and continue their education seamlessly.

The emphasis on language proficiency in the curriculum has a significant influence on students' writing and speaking skills. Similar to CBSE, the availability of schools across the country makes it easier for students to switch schools if needed. This flexibility in school transfers facilitates smoother transitions for students within the education system.

The board proves advantageous for students who are preparing for state-level examinations or actively involved in co-curricular activities such as sports, as it generally imposes lower academic pressure. However, due to its focus on the specific state, transitioning to schools outside of the state can pose challenges for students.
