Israel has drafted a record 3,00,000 nationals for reserve duty as it goes on the “offensive” in response to a multi front attack by Hamas. Following the Saturday surprise assault by the Palestinian militant group, Israeli aircraft have been pounding targets in the Gaza Strip while its ground forces have battled to retake control of border villages and towns overrun by Palestinian gunmen.

Since the Saturday attacks, 3,00,000 reservists have been called up by the military, said Chief military spokesperson Rear-Admiral Daniel Hagari, according to Reuters, adding, “We have never drafted so many reservists on such a scale.”

Another Reuters report stated that Israeli airlines have added more flights to bring home reservists who were being charged $900 for flying from the United States, $650 from Bangkok, and $300 from Europe by Israeli flight carrier, El Al.

What Is Israeli Army Reserve?

All Israeli citizens above the age of 18, regardless of gender are required to serve in the Israeli Defence Forces. For the men who enlist for conscription, the duration is minimum of 32 months and minimum of 24 months for women. Religious women, married individuals, and those deemed unfit medically or mentally are granted exemption for the mandatory military services.

Majority of these individuals who complete their compulsory military service are obligated to serve the military during times of conflict, war — like the one currently prevailing — or other national emergencies.

To ensure that the reservists are prepared and maintain their skills when called upon for service, the Israeli Defence Forces conduct periodic training exercises.

Russia, North and South Korea, Cuba, Turkey, Iran, and Brazil are some of the nations, beside Israel, which require their citizens to enlist for mandatory services in the armed forces for a period of time.

Who Are Called For Reserve Duty

Typically, reservists until the age of 40 or even 50 are called for their military services but this varies depending on the role and specific requirement and includes people from all walks of life. Famous Israeli actor Lior Raz, known for his role in popular TV 'Fauda' joined the volunteer group Brothers in Arms on the front lines in Israel's war against Hamas.

The term of reserve duty varies according to duration and frequency of service with some serving several weeks a year while others on-call for longer periods. Reservists are entitled to certain benefits including remuneration for their service which can be a significant part of their income during service and other benefits such as healthcare.
