The TV adaptation of Anirudh Pathak’s 'Mughal-e-Azam', which will reportedly star Shaheer Sheikh as 'Salim', is creating a huge buzz among the viewers. The makers are in talks with various known names to play pivotal roles for the upcoming 'Colors' show. Recently, Barkha Bisht Sengupta rejected the offer to play Shaheer's on-screen mother. But the makers have finally found their queen 'Jodha'. TV actress Gurdeep Kohli Punjj, who became a household name as 'Juhi' after 'Sanjivani', is confirmed to play Shaheer's on-screen mother.

While many actresses stay away from playing mother on-screen, Gurdeep has no such qualms.

Speaking about the same in an interview with a leading daily, she said, “I can’t keep waiting for a mature love story to come my way. Roles should be written for senior actresses as well.”
On being asked if she had reservations about playing mother to a grown-up actor, she further said that, “Not at all. I have no such qualms. Though the age difference isn’t much, I have worked for more years than Shaheer. People have seen me mature as an actor, so they offer me roles keeping that in mind. Also, this is a historical show and we know that women would get married at an early age back then. It’s a strong character and I am too excited to play the part. I am a mother of two in real life and so, maternal love comes naturally to me. That makes it easier to portray my character with conviction.”

Gurdeep also revealed that she prefers playing mother to a son onscreen. She shared her thoughts on the same & further told TOI that, “I prefer playing mother to a son than a daughter. That’s because a mom’s track often ends abruptly on shows after the daughter’s marriage. I think about all these aspects before taking up a role.”
On the TV front, Gurdeep has been a part of various hit shows like 'Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka', 'Kasamh Se', 'Diya Aur Baati Hum' among others & was last seen in ZEE TV's 'Sethji'. Also, she made her digital debut this year with Ekta Kapoor's OTT platform ALTBalaji's 'Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain' co-starring Ronit Roy & Mona Singh.
