Prominent actress Parvathy has voiced her disapproval of the recent mass resignation of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) executive members, including its president, Mohanlal. In an interview with Mojo Story, Parvathy described the decision as an act of cowardice, expressing her disappointment at their decision to step down at a time when they are expected to be accountable and speak to the media.

Parvathy on mass resignation of AMMA

Reflecting on the AMMA leadership's collective resignation, Parvathy remarked, "The first thought that I had when I heard the news about this collective resignation was, 'How cowardly. How cowardly of them to step away from a position where they are now accountable to speak to media'. That was the immediate cop-out. Again the onus falls on us women to take the conversations and debates forward and all of it."

She further criticised the leadership for failing to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders to find a solution. She said that this same executive committee had previously welcomed back the main accused in a sexual assault case even as the legal proceedings were ongoing.

Parvathy on the inner working of AMMA

Parvathy, who had previously been a member of AMMA, also shed light on the inner workings of the organisation, stating, "I'm not surprised at their behaviour. I was part of AMMA before, I've seen how they function. There's a reason why I happily resigned from the association. There is no one they can fool with this kind of behaviour...Society is now seeing them for who they are."

She went on to describe AMMA as an environment characterised by fear and authoritarianism, asserting that the association would benefit from better leadership moving forward.

Why AMMA members resigned

The resignation of Mohanlal and other office-bearers comes amidst growing allegations of sexual harassment within the Malayalam film industry. Over the past few days, several female actors have come forward with accusations against prominent figures, including director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh. These revelations have surfaced in the wake of the Justice K Hema Committee report, which highlighted the pervasive issue of workplace harassment in the industry.
