New Delhi: 'King of Kotha' released amid high anticipation on Thursday. The Dulquer Salmaan and Aishwarya Lekshmi starrer Malayalam gangster drama recorded an opening of Rs. 7.70 crores, reported trade site Sacnilk.com. The high-octane action drama has created quite some anticipation among fans especially after the release of 'Guns & Gulaabs' on Netflix.
Audience reviews for 'King of Kotha' are glowing. The official figures should be released on Saturday morning about the total collection of the film.
Earlier, in an interview with a news agency, Dulquer Salmaan had spoken about the micro marketing budget of his film and the scope and expanse of ambition and audience they wanted to reach.
The trailer of 'King of Kotha' was attached to 'Gadar 2' movie. About the same, Dulquer Salmaan told ANI, We can't have a bigger marketing than that, because people might have seen our trailer even now. So we hope that we can also ride the wave of right and time,” He had also said, “In India, we all have a belief that if the time is good, everything will work, maybe their time is very good, so we can also benefit from it."
To PTI, speaking about the audience's need of the bigger cinematic experience and what 'King of Kotha' can offer, he said, "In the current climate, people want theatrical experience. In Malayalam, we do so much of smaller, intimate realistic storytelling... I was like, ‘You need to draw people to theatres. They should come and celebrate’. It should be visually spectacular and technically sound. The massive tentpole films that we all celebrate are not made easily. There’s a lot of effort, time, and money that go into it."
In 'King of Kotha', Dulquer Salmaan plays the titular role. The film also features Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Prasanna, Nyla Usha and Gokul Suresh among others.
Produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Zee Studios, the film has been directed by Abhilash Joshiy.
'King of Kotha' is bankrolled on a budget of Rs. 50-60 crores and has been released in Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.
