Mumbai: Comedian Abish Matthew trended on social media for all the wrong reasons on Wednesday (May 19) after his 9-year-old tweet re-surfaced on Twitter. The netizens expressed their displeasure over Matthew’s 2012 tweet in which he mocked former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. They slammed the comedian for his derogatory tweet, calling it ‘sexist’ and ‘casteist’.
Abish had called the Bahujan Samaj Party supremo ‘ugly’ in his tweet, which received flak from all the corners. Twitter users lambasted the comedian for his offensive tweet and demand his arrest. The hashtag #Arrest_Abish_Mathew became the top trend on Twitter as several users demanded strict action against him.

While Mathew has received praises for entertaining the fans, his nine-year-old tweet didn’t go down well with Twitterati. One user wrote, “It’s not about how old the tweet is. Will the court give you mercy only because you murdered or raped someone 7-8 years ago? No. @abishmathew should be in jail and he will find it funnier in jail.” He attached the screenshot of Abish's tweet while sharing the post.

The comedian, who is the host of 'Son of Abish' and 'Journey Of A Joke', is yet to react to the controversy.

Popular TV actress Munmun Dutta had also faced the wrath of the fans for using a casteist slur in her vlog. Netizens trended #ArrestMunmunDutta on Twitter after a clip from her video went viral on the internet.
The ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ actress issued a statement on social media after she landed in a controversy. She said that she didn't intend to hurt someone's feelings.
"One word used by me has been misinterpreted. It was never said with the intent of insult, intimidate, humiliate or hurt anyone's feelings," Dutta said.
According to a report in Times Of India, a case has been filed against Dutta under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
