Alia Bhatt on Kangana Ranaut calling her and Ranbir Kapoor apolitical: I have an opinion, but I like to keep it to myself
Kangana, who's latest film 'Manikarnika : The Queen of Jhansi' entered 100 crore club, was speaking about her film journey and the films that inspired her.
The films 'Devdas'(2002) and 'Black'(2005) had a grand impact on her and when she was asked during the interview with Mid-Day to talk about her movie-moments, she narrated her experience of watching both the films.
Talking about Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer 'Devdas', Kangana told the daily- "I was 13 or 14 when they [friends at Chandigarh hostel] took us to watch Devdas. It is based on literature that I was not exposed to. Along with direction, for the first time, the artiste, thinker, or someone who loves to contemplate, had been seriously seduced.
So the ethos of two extremely strong-headed people [in Devdas] and their egos, meant much more. At that age, I could identify with it. I would cry, and think about life. And, of course, those amazing, grand visuals, and the way he depicted them was poetic, something I'd never seen before."
She then moves on to Rani Mukerji, Amitabh Bachchan's 'Black' -
"And then I remember going for Black. At that time, people around me from theatre were suggesting I do films, which I thought would be difficult. I went with my roommate Kamlesh, who was almost my mother's age."
"So she took me to watch Black, and told me if we could act like that, we could also become like them. And I said, "I can do this. What's the big deal?" She was like, "Oh my god, look at you?" I said in theatre, we do this in one go. Here, you have to do it in segments; and if you mess up, you can do it again! I went back to my hostel, tried to enact [Rani Mukerji's character] before the mirror. And I knew I can definitely do this. That day, I found the confidence."
Both the films are helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and when asked if Kangana met the directer since, she made a revelation over 'Padmaavat' too, saying- "Oh, yes. In fact, we had a brief meeting for Padmaavat (2018). He narrated me the script."
When the journalist asked "He offered you the film?".
Kangana replied to the daily: "Yes. There was this conversation, and I was doing Manikarnika then, so it didn't go anywhere. But we had a brief narration. Before that as well, he wanted me to do the Ram-Leela song."
Kangana's take on Rani's role in 'Black' is sure to start a new controversy. Rani Mukerji recently commenced her 'Mardaani 2' shoot while Kangana's coming up films are 'Mental Hai Kya'(with Rajkummar Rao, Amyra Dastur, Amrita Puri and Jimmy Shergill) and 'Panga'(starring also Jassi Gill, Richa Chadha and Neena Gupta).
