Bengaluru: Jnanpith award winner, multi-lingual film actor and noted theatre personality Girish Karnad passed away here on Monday (10th June), an official said. He was 81. "Karnad died at home at around 8:30 a.m. due to age-related symptoms," an official in the Karnataka Chief Minister's office told IANS.

Girish Karnad's funeral will take place today (10th June).

On the Bollywood front, Girish Karnad is known for playing pivotal role in 2017 hit film 'Tiger Zinda Hai'. He played the role of RAW chairman Shenoy in 'Tiger Zinda Hai' and was seen sharing space with Salman Khan in Ali Abbas Zafar directorial.

Apart from 'Tiger Zindagi Hai', Girish Karnad was also seen in films like 'Ek Tha Tiger', 'Tiger Zinda Hai', 'Shivaay', 'Chalk n Duster' among others.

He was bestowed with Padma Shri in the year 1974 and Padma Bhushan in the year 1992 by the Government of India for his contribution in arts. He was also the recipient of 4 Filmfare awards.

The actor is survived by his wife Dr Saraswathy Ganapathy and their two children.
