Chennai: Kangana Ranaut's Thalaivi gears up for theatrical release on September 10 after a long wait due to the pandemic despite high offers from OTT platforms. The Pan-India movie Thalaivi directed by AL Vijay featuring Kangana Ranaut and Arvind Swamy is a biopic on former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa’s life.

Taking to Instagram, Kangana revealed the release date of this much-awaited movie and shared a new poster from the movie. The 'Dhaakad' actress wrote while sharing, "The story of this iconic personality deserves to be witnessed only on the BIG SCREEN! Pave way, for #Thalaivii as she is all set to make a superstar entry into the world of cinema, yet again, a place where she has always belonged! Thalaivii IN CINEMAS near you on 10th September! #ThalaiviiOnTheBigScreen #ThalaiviiInTheatres”.

Earlier on June 19, which marked the birthday of Arvind Swamy, the crew released the first look poster of 'Thalaivi'. In the poster, Arvind Swamy was seen as the late former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. Apart from Kangana and Arvind Swamy, Nassar will be seen as M Karunanidhi, Bhagyashree as Sandhya, Samuthirakani as RM Veerappan, Madhu Bala as VN Janaki Ramachandran and Poorna as VK Sasikala.

All the more, the movie faced several delays due to the pandemic and a court hearing. The movie was first scheduled for a theatrical release on June 26, 2020, but the pandemic struck and the makers had to postpone the movie. After a year, the makers once again scheduled the release of the movie on April 23, 2021. However, the second wave led to the closure of the movie theatres and once again, the release of 'Thalaivi' was postponed.

The film also ran into a controversy after Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa Jayakumar in November 2019 registered a case in Madras High Court against the filmmakers stating that she is the legal heir of Jayalalithaa and the creators should have approached her before making the film and should have shared the script with her before release. Following this, the Court gave permission to Deepa to take legal action against director AL Vijay and film producer Vishnu.
