The film is based on the encounter of Veerappan and to perfect it, Ram Gopal Varma did a lot of research. He gathered as much information he could lay his hands upon. He did interviews with people who used to mediate between him and the government. He also talked to some of the dacoit's ex gang members and officers who were a part of the operation.

As per the reports on TOI, a particular scene from the movie unravels Veerappan's plot to kidnap the legendary superstar Rajnikanth in the same way he had kidnapped Kannada superstar Rajkumar. The filmmaker learnt about this plan through sources close to the bandit. Ram Gopal Varma says, "From all the truth I gathered, Veerappan's story was unbelievable. But what is even more unbelievable is the drama which went behind the plan to kill him."
Zareen Khan's song ''Khallas'' is already out and the movie will release on May 27, 2016.
