New Delhi: Veteran actress Nimmi aka Nawab Banoo has left for her heavenly abode on Wednesday (March 25). She was 87. The ‘Sazaa’ actress, who achieved stardom in the 1950s and early 1960s, passed away after a prolonged illness.


Bollywood critic and trade analyst Atul Mohan shared the news of Nimmi's death on Twitter. He wrote, "#SadNews Yesteryear actress #Nimmi ji is no more. She was 87 years old. She is known for 1950s and 60s hits films like #Aan #Barsaat #Amar #Daag #Deedar #BasantBahar  #MereMehboob #Kundan etc. Our prayers with the family. #NimmiJi."



The Bollywood actress was known for her roles in films like ‘Uran Khatola’, ‘Aan’, ‘Bhai-Bhai’, ‘Mere Mehboob’ and ‘Pooja Ke Phool’. Raj Kapoor had rechristened Nawab Banoo as "Nimmi".

Nimmi, who made her Hindi films debut with 'Barsaat', won the hearts of the audience with her role of a mountain shepherdess. The huge success of 'Barsaat' made Nimmi a star and nationwide sensation overnight.



Nimmi was married to S. Ali Raza, who passed away in 2007. The couple was not blessed with children and hence, they adopted Nimmi's sister's son.
