New Delhi: Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most admired and successful storytellers of Hindi cinema. Despite having directed only 5 films so far, the director has set a benchmark for visionary storytelling for generations to come. The director’s subtle style of narration has earned him huge admiration from the audience, industry and critics alike.

On his birthday today, we take a look at his box office blockbusters that created magic on the silver screen.

Munnabhai MBBS (2003)

Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial debut starring Sanjay Dutt in the lead role, bagged him the title of a master storyteller. Not only the movie became one of the biggest box offiice blockbusters that year, but the characters of Munna and Circuit were brought home by the audience. The film came as a breath of fresh air, giving the audience a break from romantic dramas.

Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006)

The sequel to the hit blockbuster once again had the hit combination of Munna and Circuit, where the characters put forth a social message in their own way. Like the previous part, the film was well-received by the audience.

3 Idiots (2009)

The movie has carved a niche for itself as one of the most path-breaking films of Bollywood. The characters are etched in people’s memory. The movie that dealt with realistic situation and issues, presented to the audience in a fun and entertaining way with a heartfelt social message, was loved thoroughly by viewers.

PK (2014)

Overwhelmed by the massive success of ‘3 Idiots’, the director once again collaborated with Aamir Khan for a completely out-of-the-box story. The message that the film carried was strong yet presented in such a way that the audience was spell-bound by the narration. The satirical take on malpractices in the name of religion came as an eye-opener for viewers. The film also featured Anushka Sharma and the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Sanju (2018)

Hirani collaborated with Ranbir Kapoor for this biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt. The movie that became one of the highest grossers of that year, once again plummeted Ranbir’s career that was going downhill after delivering back-to-back flop movies. The film bagged various awards for the plot, that year.

Take a look at some of Hirani’s iconic characters

Munnabhai: Sanjay Dutt who had created the image of a ‘bhau’ through his previous films, came as a completely different person through his role of Munna. He instantly won hearts with his role as a bad guy turned good.

Circuit: Arshad Warsi’s character breathed life into the film through his amazing performance. The crazy yet unconditional love that he had for his friend, made the audience crave for a friend like him.

Virus in ‘3 idiots’: Boman Irani’s character was of that one strict teacher we all have encountered in some stage of our lives. The bittersweet character of Virus left its impression on the audience’s minds.

Raju Rastogi and Farhan Ansari in ‘3 idiots’: The characters of Raju And Farhan, that belonged to two different ends of a spectrum were other wonderful characters that Rajkumar brought to life. The characters were very relatable with all of us remembering a Raju and a Farhan in our group.
