The gruesome incident came to limelight when a forest officer in Malappuram district shared the details of the horrific incident on his Facebook page.
Forest official Mohan Krishnan, penned an emotional note narrating the events that lead to the death of the elephant. "When we saw her she was standing in the river, with her head dipped in the water. She had a sixth sense that she was going to die. She took the Jalasamadhi in the river in a standing position", he wrote.
According to reports, the wild elephant came out of the forest, and entered into a nearby village in search of food. As she walked on the streets, locals offered her the cracker-laden pineapple. The fruit exploded in the pregnant elephant's mouth and she met her tragic end.
The elephant was seen standing in the river with her mouth and trunk in the water, for some relief from the pain.Officials got to know about the elephant only on May 25, two days before she died on May 27.
The elephant was taken back inside the forest in a truck, where the forest officials cremated her.
