The plot of the Netflix original revolves around the life of a young girl ‘Kajal’ portrayed by Bhumi Pednekar. Kajal ventures to Noida while searching for a job and starts living with her cousin ‘Dolly’ portrayed by Konkona Sen Sharma, who has a perfect family consisting of her husband and her two kids.

Jotted below are some of the reasons one should watch ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’-

Highlighting the deception of an ‘apparently happy’ marriage

The movie gives tongue to the deception of the concept of an ‘apparently happy’ marriage that prevails in society. Pointing towards gender discrimination, societal roles and moral ethics, the character of Dolly makes a plan to live a luxurious life keeping aside her ‘problematic’ marriage.

Objectification of women

There is an instance in the film where Kitty tells Dolly ‘Amit jiju humse sex karna chahte hai’ which goes on to highlight how women are constantly subjected to sexual objectification. When Kitty finds a job for herself at a call centre for love and sex chats, she finds herself surrounded with men callers luring her with comments like ‘What is the size of your breasts’ and other enticing remarks. The movie also portrays how only a woman is expected to take care of the family.

Brings out the layers of ‘Womanhood’

A woman is not only a ‘piece of object’ as depicted by the majority of society. The journey of a girl to womanhood is altogether a different transformation. When a girl tries to set up an empire of her own by working hard even if she does not like the job, all she deserves is a little appreciation. ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ beautifully illustrates the ‘expected societal norms’ for a woman when Dolly finds out about Kitty working in a call centre for love and sex chats. Instead of standing by her cousin, the character of Konkona Sen Sharma can be seen opposing her sister’s work choice.

‘Womanhood’ is not only being a girl, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend or a sister. It is more than that. Women have to layer themselves at every step they take to stay inside the boundaries that the society has built for them.

To conclude, ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ is a full-packed entertainment drama with an excellent casting of actors supported by a good script.
