She is the only singer to be awarded the highest civilian honour -- the Bharat Ratna. Among the other honours she received are Dadasaheb Phalke Award, France's highest civilian award (Officer of the Legion of Honour), three National Awards and several Filmfare awards.
Her sister Asha Bhosle wrote on Twitter, "Birthday greetings to the one and only Lata Didi."
Actors Anil Kapoor and Raveena Tandon also wished the veteran singer on the occasion.

Veteran ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas extended his wishes to Mangeshkar and prayed for her long life.
"Happy birthday respected Bharat Ratna Lata ji wish you good health and a long life filled with happiness thank you for the music. Blessed to be born in your era @mangeshkarlata" he wrote.
Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra posted, "A very happy birthday to the legend Lata Mangeshkar. Having your name on the album of my film was no short of a dream come true for me. Thank you for giving us 'Luka Chupi'."
"Many happy returns of the day to the Nightingale of India and our Maa Saraswati... Lata Mangeshkar didi Wish you a happy and a healthy life. Goddess of music," wrote Madhur Bhandarkar.
