Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar’s much-awaited film ‘BellBottom’ released in theatres on Thursday (August 19). The espionage spy thriller became the first major movie to arrive in the cinema halls after the last quarter was affected by the second wave of Coronavirus. The movie, which has been directed by Ranjit M Tiwari, has received rave reviews from the critics and audience upon its release.

Trade pundits were expecting ‘BellBottom’ to earn over Rs 3 crore on its opening day at the box office. If a recent report in BoxOfficeIndia is to be believed, the film couldn’t cross the Rs 3-cr mark on its first day. The highly-anticipated flick made between Rs 2.5 to Rs 2.75 crore on Thursday, the report said.

BellBottom Fails To Beat Roohi & Mumbai Saga

Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer ‘Roohi’, which released in March 2021, had raked in Rs 3.06 crore on its opening day. The horror comedy co-starring Varun Sharma performed well in multiplexes. Bollywood critic Taran Adarsh had shared the collection of the film on Twitter, mentioning that it earned a decent amount in the tier-2 cities.

‘BellBottom’ reportedly failed to beat the opening day box office collection of John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi’s gangster drama ‘Mumbai Saga’. The film had collected Rs 2.82 on its first day of release.

Can ‘BellBottom’ Pick Up Pace?

Considering theatres are still closed in Maharashtra, a key market, ‘BellBottom’ has managed to perform decently. One has to take in account that cinema halls in several parts of the country are not operating to their full capacity as a precautionary measure against COVID-19.

The film has released on a Thursday instead of the usual Friday, which gives it a four-day window. ‘BellBottom’ is expected to pick up pace during the weekend shows.

'BellBottom' Cast

The film also stars Huma Qureshi, Vaani Kapoor and Lara Dutt in key roles. The movie, which is based on a real-life hijacking incident, has been produced by Vashu Bhagnani. The cast and crew shot for ‘BellBottom’ in Scotland in 2020.
