Pianist-vocalist musician duo Sourendro-Soumyojit are all set to be back with their annual World Music Day concert in Kolkata this year. The gala event that the duo has been organising since 2010 will see an eclectic line-up of artistes performing in the City of Joy. This year’s show, to be held on Tuesday, June 21, will also pay a special tribute to Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary singer India lost earlier this year.

The 90-minute World Music Day Concert 2022 Kolkata will be held at the Science City auditorium.

According to a press release issued by Sourendro-Soumyojit’s team, among the singers who will be performing at the concert are Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Hariharan, Usha Uthup, Shubha Mudgal and Papon. Besides, there will be Shubhomita from Kolkata alongside Sourendro-Soumyojit — all presenting one song each.

Sourendro and Soumyojit say though Kolkata was always referred to as the cultural capital of the country, the city never saw any celebration on World Music Day earlier. They held their first World Music Day Concert in 2010, after completing college, to bring all kinds of artists on one stage “for the sake of music”.

From Grammy winners such as Stephane Grapheilli to legendary Asha Bhonsle, to football great Pele and German popstar Stephan Stoppok, all have participated in the event’s earlier editions. Hariharan, Usha Uthup and Papon have performed earlier also and remained associated with the initiative “as friends and as collaborators”.

The singers will be dedicating Tuesday’s event to Lata Mangeshkar’s genius, “discovering world music through her songs”.
