It was an evening of emotion, celebration, and history-making moments as Broadway’s finest gathered at Lincoln Center in New York City for the 78th Annual Tony Awards. Hosted by the ever-graceful Cynthia Erivo, the ceremony honoured achievements across 26 categories in live theatre, bringing together the energy and brilliance that only Broadway can deliver.

Among the night’s most memorable wins was Succession star Sarah Snook, who earned the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’. In another landmark moment, Kara Young made history by becoming the first Black actor to win Tony Awards in two consecutive years, taking home the award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in ‘Purpose’.

‘Purpose’ and ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ Dominate the Top Honours

The award for Best Play went to ‘Purpose’, beating out tough contenders including ‘Oh, Mary!’, ‘John Proctor is the Villain’, ‘English’, and ‘The Hills of California’.

On the musical front, ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ emerged as the night’s big winner, claiming Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. Darren Criss also won Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance in the same show.

Another standout was ‘Sunset Blvd.’, which walked away with Best Revival of a Musical and Best Lighting Design. Nicole Scherzinger won Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her role in the production, delivering a performance that captivated critics and audiences alike.

Other big winners

In the Best Actor in a Play category, Cole Escola won for ‘Oh, Mary!’, outshining a field that included George Clooney (‘Good Night, and Good Luck’), Daniel Dae Kim (‘Yellow Face’), and Harry Lennix (‘Purpose’).

On the supporting side, Francis Jue was named Best Featured Actor in a Play for ‘Yellow Face’, and Natalie Venetia Belcon won Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her powerful turn in ‘Buena Vista Social Club’.

Jak Malone took home the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for ‘Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical’.
