New Delhi: Celebrated filmmaker Christopher Nolan clinched his first Academy Award of his illustrious career for 'Oppenheimer' at the 96th Academy Awards.
Despite earning eight nominations over two decades, including recognition for 'Memento' (screenwriting) in the 2000s, 'Inception' (best picture, screenwriting) in 2010, and 'Dunkirk' (best picture, directing) in 2017, Nolan finally received the long-awaited honour.
Upon receiving the prestigious award, Nolan said, “Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old.”
Reflecting on the unpredictable trajectory of the film industry, he added, “We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”
Nolan faced tough competition in the category, contending against Justine Triet ('Anatomy of a Fall'), Martin Scorsese ('Killers of the Flower Moon'), Yorgos Lanthimos ('Poor Things'), and Jonathan Glazer ('The Zone of Interest').
Oppenheimer wins big
Nolan’s film ‘Oppenheimer’ bagged seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture.
In the Best Picture category, the film had competition from ‘American Fiction’, ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, ‘Barbie’, ‘The Holdovers’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Maestro’, ‘Past Lives’, ‘Poor Things’ and ‘The Zone of Interest’.
