From release date to character guide, here is everything that we know about 'Gladiator 2':

Gladiator 2 trailer breakdown

"Years after witnessing the death of revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist," the official plot synopsis says.

Set in ancient Rome, the three-minute-long trailer introduces Paul Mescal as grown-up Lucius. He is the nephew of the late Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) and the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). He recalls watching Maximus as he talks about taking down Rome. When a flashback appears, he says, “I remember that day. I never forgot it—that a slave could take revenge against an emperor.”
Lucius, who has no memories of his past, is pushed into the Colosseum after his home is invaded by the tyrannical Emperors who lead Rome. Now, he must go against the new young emperors, Caracalla and Geta, in order to avenge his family.

Cast and character list: Who is who in Gladiator 2?

‘Gladiator 2’ will feature Paul Mescal as Lucius and Denzel Washington as Macrinus, a former slave. Meanwhile, seasoned actor Pedro Pascal will play the role of the disgraced general Marcus Acacius.

Here’s more about the characters played by the ensemble cast:

Paul Mescal - Lucius Verus

Pedro Pascal - Marcus Acacius

Denzel Washington - Macrinus

Derek Jacobi - Senator Gracchus

Connie Nielsen - Lucilla

Joseph Quinn - co-emperor Caracalla

Fred Hechinger - co-emperor Geta

Tim McInnerny - Thraex

Who is the villain in Gladiator 2?

Actor Pedro Pascal, who plays one of the major villains, will star as General Marcus Acacius. It seems that Macrinus' plan calls for him to fight against Lucius in the arena. Previously, Pascal was seen playing Oberyn Martell in the popular series ‘Game of Thrones’ and Javier Peña in the crime drama ‘Narcos’.

Why didn't Russell Crowe do Gladiator 2?

All Maximus fans are ought to be disappointed, as Russell Crowe is currently not a part of ‘Gladiator 2’. The viewers might not get a glimpse of him even in new flashback appearances. However, fans can be treated to some archive footage from the 2000s movie, but there have been no reports of the actor shooting any new scenes. Since Crowe would probably be considered past the appropriate age to return to his role as Jack Aubrey, this makes sense.
