New Delhi: Celebrities lined the red carpet for the 80th Golden Globe Awards, which premiered on television on Tuesday. After a two-year boycott by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) due to complaints about the organization's lack of diversity and unethical commercial practises, the annual Golden Globe Awards were once again broadcast live.
The first Golden Globe Awards were presented in January 1944 at the 20th Century Fox studios to recognise the greatest motion pictures produced in 1943.
Here are a few highlights from Golden Globes 2023 awards:
S. S. Rajamouli helmed RRR's track Naatu Naatu makes history
The award for the best original song went to the worldwide hit 'RRR' song Naatu Naatu from India. The song entered the competition as the underdog because Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and director-singer Guillermo del Toro were also in the running.
Steven Spielberg bagged Best Picture for 'The Fabelmans'
The coming-of-age movie 'The Fabelmans', which was directed by Steven Spielberg, won Best Picture in the drama category. On stage, director Quentin Tarantino made light of the nominations.
"Tom Cruise, Steven Speilberg, Elvis Presley, Cate Blanchett and Whatever those blue people are called .. These are the people for Best Picture, Drama," he said.
Along with Austin Butler's 'Elvis', Cate Blanchett's 'Tar', Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun: Maverick', and James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water, "The Fabelmans" was nominated.
'House of the Dragon' defeats strong competition to win Best Drama Series
A top TV series award at the 80th Golden Globes was won by the 'Game of Thrones' prequel series 'House of the Dragon'. The shows in the category, including AMC's 'Better Call Saul', Netflix's 'The Crown' and 'Ozark', and Apple TV+'s 'Severance', were defeated by it to win the title of Best Drama Series.
Rihanna congratulated RRR team over Naatu Naatu win
For the top award at the 2023 Golden Globes, MM Keeravaani's Naatu Naatu defeated Grammy winners Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. The pop icon approached the 'RRR' table and offered her congratulations to the winners. Singer Rihanna turned to greet director SS Rajamouli in a video that showed them exchanging congrats.
Eddie Murphy refers to the controversial Oscars fiasco
In his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, Eddie Murphy brought up the controversial moment at the Oscars last year. He talked of the incident when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock for making fun of Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia. Murphy offered some crucial guidance for aspiring professionals in the field.
"It's a blueprint and I've followed it my whole career. It's very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith's wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!" Murphy said at the end of his speech.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Golden Globes
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, virtually attended the 80th Golden Globes event. Then, Zelensky addressed the audience through a recorded message, recalling the 1944 inauguration of the Golden Globes. During his speech he said "there'll be no third world war, it is not a trilogy".
Michelle Yeoh condemns racism after her win
Michelle Yeoh spoke out against racism she encountered early in her career when she accepted the Best Actress - Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy prize at the 2023 Golden Globes for her work in 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'.
"When I first arrived here, I was told I was a minority. Forget about them knowing North Korea, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, or India. Someone also told me 'Oh you know English'. To which I replied, 'yeah the flight to the US is 13 hours long, so I learned the language on the flight'," she said.
