Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, now a reigning figure in Hindi cinema, had modest beginnings. One of his early roles was in the film 'In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones', written by author and activist Arundhati Roy. A vintage clip from the movie, featuring SRK in a gay character role, has recently resurfaced online.

When SRK played a gay character

The film tells the story of an idealistic student, Anand Grover, also known as Annie (played by Arjun Raina), who prefers dreaming up utopian solutions for India’s problems over studying. Arundhati Roy herself appears in the film as Annie's girlfriend, Radha, a free-spirited bohemian. The cast also includes Roshan Seth, Rituraj Singh, and Manoj Bajpayee, a four-time National Award winner, in various supporting roles.

Directed by Arundhati's ex-husband Pradip Kishen, 'In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones' was a critical success, earning two National Awards—one for Roy's screenplay and another for Best Feature Film in English for Pradip. Released in 1989, the movie offers a glimpse into the lives of students in late 1970s Delhi.

SRK had made his TV debut the previous year with the popular show 'Fauji' and went on to appear in smaller roles in serials like 'Umeed' and 'Wagle Ki Duniya', before landing a lead role in Aziz Mirza’s 'Circus'. Ever since then, there was no looking back for the actor who now enjoys the status of a superstar and a global icon.

Shah Rukh Khan's work front

Today, Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest global movie stars and among the richest, thanks to ventures like his production house Red Chillies Entertainment and his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, which recently clinched the IPL title.

On the professional front, SRK's upcoming film 'King' will feature his daughter Suhana Khan in her second role, following her debut in 'The Archies', a streaming project that did not fare well.
