Veteran actress Shabana Azmi recently took to social media to share a heartwarming throwback memory from the sets of Hum Paanch, one of the early productions by Boney Kapoor. In a nostalgic post, she reflected on working with her brother Baba Azmi, who was just starting out as a cameraman at the time.
Azmi also shared a touching moment involving her mother and, later in the week, posted an affectionate note about her husband, renowned screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar.
Shabana Azmi Recalls Shooting With Her Brother
Shabana Azmi posted a black-and-white photo with her brother Baba Azmi on her Instagram, where she is seen placing her hand on his chin.
She captioned the post: "This is one of my favourite photos with my brother #Baba Azmi on the sets of #Boney Kapoor’s #Hum Paanch directed by #Bapu."
Azmi further revealed a special behind-the-scenes moment from the film’s shoot: "A rare occasion when my mother #Shaukat Kaifi came on the set and kept praying fervently that neither of us made a mistake that could require a retake !! Mothers!"
She noted that her brother was just beginning his career with the film: "Baba was just beginning his career as an operative cameraman with the movie in which I was playing the female lead."
Hum Paanch: A Star-Studded Classic
Alongside Shabana Azmi, the film Hum Paanch featured a stellar ensemble cast including Sanjeev Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover, and Amrish Puri. A remake of the 1978 Kannada film Paduvaaralli Pandavaru, the movie marked Boney Kapoor's first major production venture.
The film had Sharad Kadwe as the cinematographer, Kamlakar Karkhanis as the editor, and music by the legendary composer duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
Shabana Azmi’s Heartfelt Tribute to Javed Akhtar
Just days after her nostalgic post, Azmi shared another personal moment on Instagram—this time, celebrating her husband, Javed Akhtar. In the photo, Akhtar is seen completely absorbed in writing, while Azmi looks at the camera.
She wrote: “The writer writes oblivious to the scenic beauty but there is peace and serenity in this photo”.
A Love Story That Began at Home
Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar first met at her father Kaifi Azmi’s home. Their bond soon turned romantic, and the couple got married in 1984. Akhtar was previously married to screenwriter Honey Irani, with whom he has two children—director Zoya Akhtar and actor-director Farhan Akhtar.
