Raj Kapoor's Anger Was An 'Understatement', He Once Made His Crew Travel For 3 Days In A Truck As Punishment: Aneez Bazmee

New Delhi: Anees Bazmee has given many hits like 'Welcome’, 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2', 'No Entry', 'Singh is Kinng'. The veteran filmmaker-writer has also been working in the industry for many years now. Bazmee began his career as an assiatant to Raj Kapoor on the sets of 'Prem Rog' and was terrified of him. In an interview with Siddhath Kannan, Bazmee revealed that calling Raj Kapoor an 'angry person' would be an understatement, as he recalled a time when the crew of 'Prem Rog' was made to travel from Mumbai to Mysuru on a truck for three days because the yesteryear star was annoyed for some reason.

Aneez admitted that he had often been yelled at by the legendary showman. He shared that people or crew would accept a lesser hotel that the same five-star the actor stayed in for fear of him. Sharing, "Angry is an understatement to describe how he could be. He was a terror. I remember it well. If he was in a bad mood and yelled at someone, the entire crew – 400 people – would fall into a pin-drop silence. He had a different personality in films; good-natured… But in real life… We assistants were terrified of him.”

When Raj Kapoor's crew would avoid staying in the same hotel as him

When asked about being yelled at, Anees said, “Oh, yes. Many times. While I used to travel with him on planes and stay with him in five-star hotels, but all of us assistants would prefer staying in less-fancy accommodation to avoid being near him. But once, I made some blunder, and I was told that I wouldn’t be travelling with him in a plane, but I would be travelling from Mumbai to Mysuru in a Jonga with the other assistants and all the lighting equipment. It took us three days.”

When they reached on set, they were told that the shooting had already started. "He doesn’t need anyone, but everyone needs him" .Anees Bazmee also added that he is grateful for the opportunity of working with Raj Kapoor, especially as a teenager. He said, “People graduate from fancy schools, I graduated from the university of Raj Kapoor.”
