Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan took to social media to apologise for a misstep in his pronunciation of a Marathi word. Known for being particular about his social media posts, including meticulously numbering them on X (formerly Twitter), the veteran actor addressed the issue through an Instagram video on Thursday.

Amitabh Bachchan apologises for wrong pronunciation

In the video, Bachchan humbly explained, “Hello, I’m Amitabh Bachchan. A few days ago, I shared a video promoting social awareness, saying that I wouldn’t litter. I also made the statement in Marathi, but my pronunciation was slightly off.”

He continued, noting the specific mistake: “The word ‘Kachra’ in Marathi was mispronounced, and my friend Sudesh Bhosale brought it to my attention. So, I’m making this video to correct it, this time with the proper pronunciation.”

What Big B had posted

Bachchan had initially shared two videos in quick succession—one highlighting the importance of cleanliness, and another supporting the Beti Bachao campaign. In the cleanliness-themed video, he had said in Marathi, “Namaskar, main hoon Amitabh Bachchan. Mee kachra karnaar naahi, main kachra nahi karunga. Dhanyawaad,” translating to, “Hello, I am Amitabh Bachchan. I won’t litter. Thank you.”

His apology comes amid a growing focus on language accuracy in states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, where linguistic pride plays a significant role in local culture.

This marks a long-awaited reunion between Amitabh and Rajinikanth, who last shared the screen in the 1991 Hindi film 'Hum', directed by Mukul Anand. 'Hum' was a major box office success, and some of its unused plot elements later inspired Rajinikanth’s 1995 cult classic 'Baasha'.

Amitabh Bachchan is currently hosting the sixteenth season of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'.
