Who is Major Mukund Varadharajan?
Major Mukund Varadarajan was an Indian Army officer commissioned in the Rajput Regiment. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his actions during a counterterrorism operation while on deputation to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu & Kashmir. 'Amaran' is his official Tamil biopic.
Mukund was an alumnus of Officers Training Academy and was commissioned as Lietenant in the Rajput Regiment in 2006. He was promoted to Captain in 2008. He also served the Uniter Nations Mission in Lebanonn and at the Infantry School in Madhya Pradesh. He was promoted ot Major in 2012 and deputed to the 44th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, posted in the Shopian district of Jammu & Kashmir.
In 2014, he led an anti-terrorist search operation in a village in South Kashmir. During his operation, his team came under heavy fire. He was responsible for eliminating two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists and their commander. During the course of the operation, he was wounded seriously but it was only after it that he collapsed after having finished his duty.
An officer who was part of the cordon operation in the house recalled, "He walked out of the outhouse. He looked okay. We thought he was fine. But then he suddenly collapsed. Nothing about his demeanour betrayed that he had three gunshot wounds and was losing copious amounts of blood. Then Mukund lost consciousness; as he was gravely injured during the assault, he succumbed to his injuries while being evacuated," an NDTV report quoted him as saying.
Who is Indhu Rebecca Varghese
Indhu Rebecca Varghese was Mukund's longtime girlfriend before the two got married. She was married to him for less than five years, and was a young mother to a then 3 year old, when her 31 year old Indian Army Major husband succumbed to gunshot injuries from a terrorist encounter in 2014.
Indhu's courage and resilience in the face of her husband's sacrifice remains an unforgettable memory. She had then said on national television, "What the country needs to see today is the man he(husband Mukund Varadarajan) was. Not my ( a grieving wife's) sorrow," after receiving Mukund's posthumous Ashok Chakra from then President Pranab Mukerhee, in the presence of former US President Barack Obama.
