Singer Adnan Sami, who was once a Pakistani citizen and now holds Indian nationality, recently shared an encounter with a few Pakistani nationals while walking through the streets of Baku, Azerbaijan. The meeting, he said, reflected the growing frustration among some Pakistanis about the current state of their country.
What Adnan Sami tweeted
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Adnan wrote, “Met some very sweet Pakistani boys while walking on the beautiful streets of Baku, Azerbaijan…They said, 'Sir, you are very lucky.. You left Pakistan in good time.. We also want to change our citizenship…WE HATE OUR ARMY…They have destroyed our country!!' I replied, 'I knew this long ago!'”
A History with both nations
Though Adnan Sami was born in London, he spent several years in Pakistan before relocating to India. He was officially granted Indian citizenship in December 2015. His association with India began much earlier, however — he first arrived in the country on March 13, 2001, on a one-year visitor visa issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Over the years, his visa was extended periodically.
His Pakistani passport expired on May 26, 2015, and with no renewal from the Pakistani authorities, he turned to the Indian government, requesting permission to stay in the country on humanitarian grounds. The request was granted, cementing his transition from a visiting artist to an Indian national.
Adnan's recent reply to Pak minister
Sami recently found himself in the middle of a social media spat after former Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain made a sarcastic reference to him. Following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir — which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, mostly tourists — the Indian government announced that all Pakistani nationals must leave India before their visas expire.
Reacting to this decision, Fawad reshared an Indian journalist’s post about the move and captioned it, “What about Adnan Sami?”
Never one to shy away from a sharp response, Adnan fired back, “Who’s going to tell this illiterate idiot!!”
