Kumar Sanu, one of the most iconic voices of the 1990s, was once in a controversial extramarital relationship with actress Kunickaa Sadanand during the height of his career. In a recent interview, Kunickaa shared candid details about their connection and how their bond developed under unusual circumstances.
Kunickaa on how she met Kumar Sanu
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Kunickaa revealed that she met Kumar Sanu early in her acting career and felt an immediate attraction. Their paths crossed in Ooty, where Kunickaa was filming, and Kumar Sanu was vacationing with his sister and nephew. Reflecting on their meeting, she said they developed a strong connection during this time.
Describing an emotional incident during that trip, Kunickaa recalled that Kumar Sanu, who was going through a "very difficult relationship" with his wife Rita, became extremely distressed. “He started crying and wanted to jump from the hotel’s window. He was very depressed. We held him down,” she told Siddharth Kannan.

After the trip, Kumar Sanu began living separately from his wife, which allowed his relationship with Kunickaa to grow. They lived close to each other, and Kunickaa played a role in guiding him on matters like fitness and fashion. Despite their closeness, the pair kept their relationship discreet. “I was like a wife to him, I considered him like my husband,” she said, reflecting on their five-year-long relationship.

Throughout their time together, Kumar Sanu’s estranged wife, Rita, was vocal about her grievances, particularly regarding financial support for their children. Kunickaa recounted incidents where Rita expressed her frustrations. “His wife smashed my car with a hockey stick. She would come outside my house and scream. But I understood her. She wanted money for her children; she wasn’t wrong. She said she didn’t want him back,” Kunickaa shared.
Eventually, the relationship between Kunickaa and Kumar Sanu came to an end. Kumar Sanu later married Saloni, with whom he has two daughters.
