MLA Hekhani Jakhalu: A lawyer by education and social entrepreneur by profession, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate Hekani Jakhalu Kense has added another feather to the hat of her success. She has become one of the first woman MLAs to win an assembly election in the state of Nagaland.
She defeated her rival Azheto Zhimomi by 1536 votes, as per official ECI data. She is among the only four women candidates out of a total of 183 who were in the fray in the state.
The other woman to create the history is Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the same party, NDPP who won from the Western Angami seat.
Education
Jakhalu is an alumna of Lady Sri Ram College in Delhi, with an LLB from Delhi University. She pursued LLM from University of San Francisco, USA. According to eastmojo, she is also an alumnus of Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education.
Working Experience
She has wide-ranging experience from working at American University in Washington, DC, Amnesty International to the United Nations headquarters in New York.
She left her practice as a lawyer and founded a youth-oriented organisation YouthNet Nagaland in 2006 with the support of some like-minded professionals to empower youth. As per eastmojo, under the global Youth Employment Summit (YES) campaign in Egypt, YouthNet was designated as the YES Nagaland Chapter.
Awards & Recognitions
Hekani was awarded the prestigious Nari Shakti Puaskar in 2018 by the then-President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
In 2021, she was bestowed with the Prerna Award by Schneider Electric, along with two other awardees. The award was presented for her excellent work in society.
The ruling BJP-NDPP alliance is all set to retain its government in the state with the alliance securing the majority mark, as per official ECI data.
