Vibhakar Shastri, the grandson of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, has joined the BJP in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak in Lucknow. He resigned from the Congress earlier in the day.

He said, "I think under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, I will be able to serve the country by further strengthening Lal Bahadur Shastri's vision of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan'."

This comes as the Congress continues to see an exodus ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. In Maharastra, top leaders like Ashok Chavan, Baba Siddique and Milind Deora quit the party. While Ashok Chavan joined hands with the BJP, Deora joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Shastri, grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and son of Hari Krishna Shastri, has previously run for Lok Sabha seats without success. Over the last few years, the Congress has experienced a string of departures, including prominent figures such as Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasad, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Sushmita Dev, RPN Singh, Jaiveer Shergill, among others, who have joined different political parties.
