New Delhi: Launching a vitriolic attack on the Uttar Pradesh government over the death of a Dalit girl in Unnao, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday asked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath not to make “false promises” regarding law and order.

“What took place in Unnao is not new to Uttar Pradesh. A Dalit woman's mother kept running from pillar to post for her daughter and she got her daughter’s dead body in the end. The administration did not listen to her. Instead of doing politics on the issue, the BJP should answer why the administration did not listen to the mother in January?” Gandhi tweeted.

The Congress leader alleged that women have to struggle to get justice under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule in Uttar Pradesh.

“Who did not listen to the plea of this daughter's mother? Yogi ji, you should stop talking about law and order in your speeches. Under your administration, women have to struggle to get justice. When they are tortured and killed, nobody listens to them,” she said in a series of tweets.

“Women are tortured and killed and you are busy making false promises,” Gandhi wrote on the micro-blogging platform in Hindi.

The Congress leader’s attack on the Uttar Pradesh government assumes significance as the state has already voted in the first phase of the assembly elections earlier on Thursday.

Voting for the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly is being held in seven phases.

Earlier on Thursday, the decomposed body of Dalit girl, who had gone missing from Unnao, was recovered from a vacant plot near an ashram constructed by Fateh Bahadur Singh, a former minister in the Samajwadi Party government.

The 22-year-old girl had gone missing on December 8. Her mother alleged that she had been kidnapped by the former minister’s son Rajol Singh.

Earlier on January 24, the victim’s mother had attempted self-immolation in front of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's vehicle in Lucknow as she alleged laxity by the police to find out the whereabouts of her daughter.

After the incident, the police arrested Rajol Singh on the same day. The recovery of the body has further supported the mother's allegations.
