As the Telangana Assembly polls approach, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken note of controversial remarks made by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and issued an advisory, urging him to adhere to the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) "in letter and spirit." Rao's comments on October 30, perceived as threatening towards Congress leadership, triggered the advisory after a complaint was filed by a National Students' Union of India (NSUI) leader.

The advisory to CM Rao emphasised the need to observe "utmost restraint and decency" in speeches, maintaining high standards of conduct during poll campaigning. The EC advisory reminded all political parties, leaders, and candidates of the guidelines in place.

"You are hereby advised to follow the provisions of the MCC in letter and spirit," stated the advisory.

In another development, the Election Commission also issued a notice to the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and IT Minister K T Rama Rao. The notice alleged that Rama Rao visited a government institution, 'T-works,' and engaged in political activities, violating the Model Code of Conduct.

Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala filed a complaint against Rama Rao, asserting that the IT Minister visited the 'T-works' office on November 20, where he interacted with a large number of youth employed at the institution.

The EC, in its notice, cited provisions of the MCC prohibiting ministers from combining official visits with electioneering work or using official machinery for political purposes. The notice observed that Rama Rao, a contesting candidate and star campaigner for BRS, violated these instructions by using a government institution for political activities.

The Commission asked Rama Rao to provide an explanation regarding the visit and use of a government institution for political purposes by 3 PM on November 26. If no response is received within the stipulated time, the EC will proceed with appropriate action or decision in the matter.

The campaign for the November 30 polls concludes on November 28.
