Independent Lok Sabha MP Sumalatha Ambareesh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bengaluru on Friday. She cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi as her inspiration and expressed admiration for his parliamentary speeches. She stated that her decision to join the BJP was influenced by the admiration for PM.

After joining BJP, Sumalatha Ambareesh said, "It's a day of a great day for my political career,  I won historically in Mandya, and I never forget that moment. Many of my supporters and Ambareesh's followers supported me. BJP supported me from the outside, PM Narendra Modi when he came to Mysuru, though I'm an independent, campaigned for me. Even Ambareesh's followers in Mandya never forget that."

"Ambareesh was in Congress for more than 25 years. I am blessed to have such blessings from BJP leaders which is my inspiration. PM Narendra Modi is my inspiration, I learnt a lot whenever the PM spoke in Parliament, and after looking at all of this, I decided to join BJP. When BS Yediyurappa was CM he supported me a lot, he gave support. Modi is a person who walks the talk. It's the happiest day for me. I wish to have everyone's blessings," she said.

Sumalatha reflected on her 2019 election campaign. Though Congress backed her in the polls, she said she did not later on receive the support of the Congress party. She said, "Ambareesh's supporters stood by me. Now when some people try to take credit for it, I don't know how logical it is? The (Congress) leadership never approached me in all these 5 years. I believe in the leadership of Modi and his ability to convert his vision into reality...My journey to join the BJP has been gradual. I am hoping I will add value to the party and the party will strengthen its base in Mandya."
