Big Names That Lost In The Assembly Elections 2021

Some of these names were considered the most promising candidates during the campaigns but couldn't quite stick up to the hopes of their respective parties.

New Delhi: The Bharitya Janta Party swept stakes at Puducherry and Assam, it couldn't quite manage to capture Kerala where the LDF retains power, West Bengal where Trinamool Congress continues to stay in power and Tamil Nadu where DMK kicked AIADMK to the curb.

Several names were considered promising candidates for their parties but lost the seats they contested in 2021 assembly polls in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam & Puducherry.

Here are some of the biggest losers from the Assembly Elections 2021:

Babul Supriyo: Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babul Supriyo entered the electoral contest from Tollygunge despite being an elected MP from Asansol but lost at the hands of TMC heavyweight and state’s PWD Minister Aroop Biswas by over 50,000 votes. Reacting to the loss the bitter singer-turned-politician in a Facebook post said that he would not congratulate West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on her party’s win in the assembly elections and lamented that the people did not give the BJP a chance.

Aishe Ghosh: JNU’s former student union leader, activist from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), could only manage to win 14 per cent of the total votes in her maiden election from the Jamuria constituency.

E. Sreedharan: The 'Metro Man' who was a last-minute recruit for the BJP was the chief ministerial candidate while in the early trends he was one the lead, he lost the Palakkad constituency by 3,859 votes to Congress candidate Shafi Parambi. 

Kushbu Sundar: Kollywood superstar was supposed to be BJP's torchbearer in Tamil Nadu. However the veteran actor is trailing from the Thousand Lights constituency.

Mamata Banerjee: Though TMC came to power for another term in West Bengal, the party supremo couldn't manage to win the Nandigram seat from which she was contesting. Suvendu Adhikari defeated Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 1,953 votes.

 

Kamal Haasan: The Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) was leading in only one seat, Coimbatore South, where Haasan himself is the candidate. However, by the end of the counting, that was lost too. Kamal Haasan suffered a major setback, losing to BJP's Mahila Morcha president Vanti Srinivasan a margin of by 1,540 votes.

 

Indranil Khan: The doctor who was detained for his social media posts highlighting the alleged shortage of protective gear in West Bengal’s hospitals, was fielded by the BJP from the Kasba constituency. Khan lost to TMC candidate Ahmed Jawed Khan by 63,622 votes.
