Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday filed the nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, a day before the deadline ends.

In the election affidavit submitted before the returning officer for his nomination, Rahul Gandhi declared an income of Rs 1.02 crore for the Fiscal Year of 2022-23. The affidavit stated that Gandhi gets his income from rent, MP salary, Royalty Income, interest from banks, bonds, dividend and capital gains from mutual funds and shares. 

The Congress MP from Wayanad also declared assets worth Rs 9.24 crore from equities, mutual funds, savings account, sovereign gold bonds, etc.

Rahul Gandhi mentioned in the affidavit that he had Rs 55,000 cash in hand as of March 15, while he had Rs 26 lakh in two savings account. The Congress MP has invested Rs 4.33 crore in equity shares, while Rs 3.81 crore in Mutual Funds. 

He also declared immovable property worth Rs 11.15 crore including commercial buildings, non-agricultural and agricultural land. 

Polling will be held in Wayanad along all of Kerala's 20 parliamentary constituencies on April 26, in the second phase, for which the last date of filing nomination papers is April 4.  

Rahul Gandhi held a massive roadshow and attacked the BJP and the RSS, accusing them of trying to destroy the Constitution and democratic nature of India, before he filed his nomination for Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, seeking a second term from there.

He also mentioned that he was convicted in Surat court for an alleged defamatory statement "against so-called Modi Samaj" in March 2023 and was punished for 2 years. The affidavit added that the conviction has been stayed vide order dated 04.08.2023 by Honourable Supreme Court in SLP No. 8644/2023.

In Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi is locked in a three-way fight with senior CPI leader Annie Raja and BJP state president K Surendran. He won from the same seat in 2019 with a margin of over four lakh votes. Gandhi got 7,06,367 votes out of the total of 10,92,197, with his closest rival CPI's P P Suneer receiving only 2,74,597 votes.
