Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi may contest the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections from Daman and Diu, a party leader from the union territory has suggested.

Speaking on the speculations of Priyanka Gandhi contesting from the UP, Daman and Diu Congress President Ketan Patel said that the party's general secretary may be a possible candidate and added that the move will benefit South Gujarat and Saurashtra, regions traditionally supportive of Congress.

"Priyanka Gandhi may be a possible candidate from Daman & Diu. I embrace this proposal," Ketan Patel told ANI.

Ketan's comments come amid speculations that Priyanka Gandhi would contest the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat after Sonia Gandhi decided to not contest the UP seat.

"The high command has given us the responsibility of data collection. With the arrival of Priyanka ji, the entire South Gujarat which has always been with Congress and Saurashtra which is adjacent to Diu, will benefit here. In data collection, points like ground reality, voters and past performance will be seen," he added.

Priyanka Gandhi had played a 'pivotal' role in saving the Himachal Pradesh government and also bridging the gap during the Congress-SP alliance in Uttar Pradesh.

As the rebellion within the Himachal Congress took centre stage after the Rajya Sabha elections, Gandhi swiftly acted to prevent further damage, news agency PTI quoted sources as saying.

During the brief crisis in Himachal, Priyanka remained in constant touch with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Himachal CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and senior leaders to "foil" the 'rebellion' of some party MLAs.

During the seat-sharing talks with Akhilesh's Samajwadi Party, the Congress leader spoke with Akhilesh over the phone on February 21 to break the deadlock, as per PTI.
