Amid the recent controversy that broke out after Salman Khurshid's niece and Samjwadi Party leader Maria Alam Khan asked people to do "Vote jihad" during a rally in Farrukhabad, PM Modi during a rally in Gujarat on Thursday criticised the leader for seeking votes on religious grounds and went on to slam the Congress party for maintaining silence over the remark. He added that these remarks came from an educated family and not a "child coming out of a Madrasa".
PM Modi commented on the remark saying, "A leader from the INDI alliance has exposed their strategy in front of the country. The INDI alliance has asked Muslims to go for Vote Jihad."
"I.N.D.I.A bloc is saying that all Muslims should get together and vote. The INDI alliance has insulted democracy and the Constitution. Any leader from Congress is yet to oppose this statement, indicating their tacit understanding," PM Modi said while slamming Congress for keeping mum on the remark.
Training guns at the grand old party, PM Modi added that the "I.N.D.I.A. bloc is trying to divide SC, ST, OBC and general categories, on the other hand, they are raising the slogan of Vote Jihad. This shows how dangerous their intentions are."
Maria Alam Khan during an election rally urged the minority community to come togther and do "vote jihad". Her remark landed her in legal trouble as it violated the Model Code of Conduct, which has been implemented in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.
In view of the remark, a case was registered against the Samajwadi Party leader, under sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the IPC and section 125 (promoting enmity between classes in connection with election) of the Representation of People Act," SHO of Kaimganj police station said.
