Punjab Assembly Election Result 2022: Former Punjab chief minister and Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) supremo Capt Amarinder Singh has lost his Patiala Urban constituency by a margin of 19,873 votes.


Aam Aadmi Party's Ajit Pal Singh Kohli defeated the Patiala royal as the party is headed for a massive win in the state.


Congress' Vishnu Sharma, Shiromani Akali Dal Harpal Juneja and AAP’s Ajit Pal Singh Kohli had contested against Amarinder Singh from the constituency.


In the previous election in 2017, Amarinder's victory margin was 49 per cent.

The two-time chief minister has been a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for five terms. He represented Patiala (Urban) thrice, and also Samana and Talwandi Sabo once each.


Singh had last year resigned from the Congress to form his own political party, Punjab Lok Congress. He had differences with Navjot Singh Sidhu and senior Congress party leaders over various political issues, including election strategy for the state.


Election in Punjab for the 117-member assembly was held in a single phase on February 20. Nearly 72 per cent vote was cast during the polling, which is marginally lower than the 77.4 per cent recorded in the 2017 assembly election. The total number of candidates fighting the assembly election was 1,304, which is the highest ever.


This is the second state that the AAP has won, after Delhi. Repeating its performance in the two consecutive Delhi elections, the party registered a landslide majority in Punjab too.


Taking to Twitter, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu accepted his party's defeat in the elections.  


He posted: "The voice of the people is the voice of God …. Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab …. Congratulations to Aap !!!"
