Congress leader Nana Patole resigned as the party chief in Maharashtra days after Congress faced defeat in the state assembly elections. Congress fought the elections as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which also has NCP (SP) and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena. Congress won only 16 out of 101 seats, NCP (SP) 10 out of 86 seats and Shiv Sena (UBT) managed to clinch only 20 out of 95 seats it contested.

Nana Patole won the Sakoli seat by a thin margin of 208 votes.
