The BJP suffered a major embarrassment at a public meeting in Maharashtra's Kolhapur when the crowd said it wanted Rahul Gandhi to take hold of the reins of the nation. The meeting was attended by Maharashtra's Guardian Minister Hasan Mushrif. A video of the incident is now being widely shared on social media.

What Happened At The Kolhapur Meeting?

While addressing the meeting, BJP's district president of the women's wing Shoumika Mahadik asked the crowd: "Do you want to hand over the reins of the country to Rahul Gandhi or Narendra Modi?" At this, the people responded “Rahul!” The reply left Shoumika, who is also the sister of BJP candidate and Rajya Sabha MP Dhananjay Mahadik, red-faced. She Stood there grinning sheepishly as the crowd laughed. Hassan Mushrif, who was sitting on the stage behind her was also seen laughing at the crowd's response.

Dhananjay Mahadik, formerly in the NCP, joined the BJP in 2019 and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. He represented the Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency from 2014 to 2019 as an NCP leader. However, he was defeated by the Shiv Sena's Sanjay Mandalik in 2019. Mahadik then joined the BJP along with his sister Shoumika and other NCP leaders.

Sanjay Mandalik is contesting the seat again this time against the Congress's Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj, who comes from the royal Bhonsale dynasty of Kolhapur.

The Kolhapur Lok Sabha seat goes to polls in the third phase on May 7. The home voting procedures for 3,964 elderly (aged above 85) and disabled citizens in the constituency began on Wednesday, May 1.
