Independent candidate from the Latur City assembly constituency of Maharashtra, Lalasab Shaikh, staged a symbolic 'funeral procession' of himself on Monday to protest against incumbent MLA Amit Deshmukh. Shaikh criticised Deshmukh for failing to deliver on promises made to voters.

Expressing confidence over his victory in coming state elections, he told news agency ANI, "I am keeping the problems in front of the public. I will win the elections. The rally is against the Congress and BJP but it is particularly against the silence of Latur MLA Amit Deshmukh on issues of Muslims. They take our votes but don't work for us. My priority is to defeat him in the elections."

Deshmukh, who has represented Latur City since 2009, served as the medical education minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government. He is also the son of former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
