Some people pelted stones and damaged several cars during an election rally in support of the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate and Union minister Sanjeev Balyan in the Khatauli area of Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Sunday. Balyan was addressing an election meeting when the cars parked in the vicinity were damaged. Additional Superintendent of Police (city) Satyanarayan Prajapat said the election rally of Balyan was underway in Madhkarimpur village on Saturday night when some unruly elements threw stones at several vehicles, breaking their window panes. The top Congress leadership is likely to hold a meeting of its Central Election Committee (CEC) here on March 31 to discuss and finalise the remaining candidates for the Lok Sabha polls starting April 19. Sources said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, besides other senior leaders and members of the CEC, are likely to attend the meet.
The sources said the names of the candidates that would be discussed during Sunday’s CECs meeting would include those to be fielded from Delhi and Maharashtra. The Congress has so far announced a total of 208 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls that are scheduled to be held in seven phases staring April 19.
The counting of votes will be taken up on June 4.

The BJP on Saturday released its eighth list of 11 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In this list, the saffron party named 3 candidates from Odisha, six from Punjab and two from West Bengal.
The party dropped actor Sunny Deol and fielded Dinesh Singh 'Babbu' from Gurdaspur, former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu got ticket from Amritsar, Shushil Kumar Rinku was fielded from Jalandhar, Hans Raj Hans from Faridkot and suspended Congress MP and wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Preneet Kaur was fielded from Patiala.
Hans Raj Hans, the incumbent BJP legislator from Delhi's North-West seat, has been shifted to Punjab. Preneet Kaur, a four-time MP and former Union Minister, joined BJP in the presence of senior leaders earlier this month.

In a jolt to the ruling Biju Janata Dal, a sitting MP and two ex-MLAs on Saturday resigned from the regional party ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha and Odisha Assembly elections. Cine star and sitting Kendrapara MP Anubhav Mohanty tendered his resignation from the BJD. Mohanty said he was "feeling suffocated" in the party for over four years.
Mohanty was the second sitting BJD MP after Bhartruhari Mahtab to quit the regional party ahead of the 2024 general elections. The Kendrapara MP was seen celebrating Holi with Mahtab in Cuttack. Actor-turned-politician and former MLA Akash Das Nayak also resigned from the BJD. In a video statement, the former Korei MLA announced his resignation from the primary membership of BJD.
