Lok Sabha Polls Phase 6: A voter turnout of 60.59 per cent was recorded provisionally on Saturday in 58 constituencies across six states and two Union territories during the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had made extensive arrangements to manage the adverse impact of the ongoing heatwave, including provisions for cold water, coolers, fans, and tents at several polling stations. Wheelchairs were also available to assist elderly voters.
The ECI reported that over 11.13 crore voters, comprising 5.84 crore males, 5.29 crore females, and 5,120 third-gender individuals, were eligible to vote in this phase. Approximately 11.4 lakh polling officials had been deployed across 1.14 lakh polling stations.
In West Bengal, where voter turnout reached 78.92 per cent, sporadic incidents of violence were reported. Voting took place in the Jangal Mahal region, a crucial tribal belt spanning five districts. Jharkhand recorded a turnout of 63.76 per cent, Uttar Pradesh 54.03 per cent, Bihar 55.24 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir 53.81 per cent, Haryana 59.61 per cent, and Delhi 57.38 per cent, as per the approximate figures updated by the ECI on its voter turnout app.

BJP Candidate's Convoy Attacked in West Midnapore
Senior BJP leader and Jhargram candidate, Pranat Tudu, reported an attack on his convoy on Saturday in the Garbeta area of West Midnapore district. Tudu claimed that the incident occurred while he was en route to Garbeta following complaints of BJP agents being barred from some polling booths.
Tudu recounted, "All of a sudden, TMC goons who had blocked the roads started hurling bricks at my car. When my security personnel tried to intervene, they were injured. Two CISF jawans accompanying me received head injuries and had to be hospitalised", as quoted by news agency PTI.
In response to the situation, a significant police contingent was dispatched to the area to restore order.
However, the local TMC leadership denied the allegations, accusing Tudu of attempting to disrupt the peaceful polling process. "The BJP nominee was threatening voters. The villagers got enraged and staged a protest," a local TMC leader asserted, as per PTI.
Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Phase 6: Mehbooba Mufti Protests In Anantnag, Delhi Undergoes Polling
In Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, contesting from the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, staged a sit-in outside Bijbehara police station. She protested against the alleged detention of her party workers and polling agents. Mufti also claimed that outgoing calls on her mobile number had been suspended. The police countered, stating, "Those detained are overground workers (OGWs) and the action was taken to ensure smooth conduct of elections", as quoted by PTI.
In the national capital, prominent figures such as President Droupadi Murmu, Union ministers S Jaishankar and Hardeep Singh Puri, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi minister Atishi, and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were among those who cast their votes. CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat alleged she had to wait almost an hour to vote due to a drained battery in the EVM control unit at her polling booth. The District Election Officer said, "The battery was replaced within 15 minutes", as per PTI.
Simultaneously, polling was conducted for 42 assembly constituencies in Odisha and the Karnal assembly bypoll in Haryana. In Haryana, BJP’s Karnal Lok Sabha candidate Manohar Lal Khattar and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were among the early voters. Saini cast his vote in his native Mirjapur Majra village, Ambala district, while Khattar voted in Karnal's Prem Nagar.
In Uttar Pradesh, polling took place in 14 constituencies, including Sultanpur, Phulpur, and Allahabad.
In Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary appealed to voters in a video message on X to "vote for a developed India." Polling occurred in eight seats, including Valmiki Nagar and Vaishali.
Odisha’s Chief Electoral Officer, N B Dhal, reported smooth voting across the state’s six parliamentary constituencies, despite some EVM glitches. The final phase of polling is scheduled for June 1, with the counting of votes set for June 4.
