Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Live: Union Minister Jitendra Singh Says Fifth Phase Polling To Reaffirm Lotus 'Blooming' In Bengal

The fifth phase polling on Monday will be a reaffirmation of the lotus "blooming" in West Bengal as the BJP is set to wrest the highest number of seats in the state, Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said.


Singh, who on Saturday returned to Delhi after campaigning in West Bengal, also asked voters to ensure they exercise their franchise.


Voting in seven Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal -- Bangaon, Barrackpur, Howrah, Uluberia, Sreerampur, Hooghly and Arambag -- will be held on May 20.


"The fifth phase of polling on Monday will reaffirm the lotus blooming in West Bengal as the BJP is set to wrest the most number of seats in the eastern state," he told PTI here on Sunday.


The lotus is the BJP's election symbol.


Singh, the Union Minister of State for Personnel, said, in the ongoing election process, in each of the four phases so far, among all the states and Union Territories, West Bengal has consistently recorded a comparatively higher voter turnout. (PTI Input)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived here on a two-day visit to Odisha to campaign for BJP candidates in simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections in the state.


After his arrival at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, Modi went to Odisha BJP's headquarters where he was scheduled to hold a meeting with the party's state leaders and would stay the night at the Raj Bhavan.


As his cavalcade moved towards the party office, people, gathered on both sides of the road, cheered for the prime minister and waved cutouts of the BJP’s election symbol ‘lotus’.


As soon as Modi arrived at the party's state headquarters for the first time, he was given a ceremonial welcome by Odisha BJP leaders. (PTI Input)

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Live: Odisha's 5 Lok Sabha Seats, 35 Assembly Constituencies To Go To Polls On May 20

Tight security arrangements have been made, with the deployment of over 33,000 personnel, for elections to five Lok Sabha and 35 assembly constituencies in Odisha on Monday, officials said.


Over 70.69 lakh voters, including 40.33 lakh men, 39.35 lakh women and 851 transgender persons, are eligible to cast their votes at 9,162 polling stations in Aska, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Bolangir and Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituencies, and 35 assembly seats falling under these parliamentary constituencies, in the second phase of polls in the state.


A total of 40 candidates are in the fray for the five Lok Sabha seats, while 265 nominees, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, will try their luck in the 35 assembly segments.


Patnaik is contesting from two assembly segments -- Hinjili under Aska Lok Sabha seat in Ganjam district and Kantabanji under Bolangir parliamentary constituency – around 400 km apart. (PTI Input)

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Live: PM Modi's Campaign In Punjab To Begin On May 23

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start his poll campaign in Punjab with his first rally in Patiala on Thursday, according to state BJP secretary.


Punjab BJP general secretary Rakesh Rathour on Sunday said the prime minister will address three public rallies in the state on May 23 and May 24.


Modi will hold his first rally in Patiala on May 23, followed by rallies in Gurdaspur and Jalandhar the next day, Rathour said.


The BJP has fielded four-time MP Preneet Kaur from the Patiala parliamentary constituency.


Sushil Rinku is the saffron party's candidate from Jalandhar while former MLA Dinesh Babbu has been fielded from the Gurdaspur seat.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed that the INDIA bloc will come to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and BJP will "not cross the 200 mark" in the polls. She accused Congress and CPI(M) of having entered into a nexus with BJP in the state to discredit the state government and asked the electorate not to vote for any non-TMC parties which will benefit the saffron camp.


Addressing an election rally at Goghat under the Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency, Banerjee claimed: "Some monks are working under the influence of BJP leaders in Delhi. Those who are looking after temples are doing great spiritual jobs, but everyone is not doing so. This is not done. We respect the monks," as quoted by news agency PTI.


One monk of a particular monastic order had forbidden the TMC agent to sit in a polling booth in the state, she alleged. The chief minister also said that one such monk, whom she earlier held in high esteem, has lost her respect for speaking against the TMC in Baharampur.

PM Modi To Visit Odisha On May 19


Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Odisha again on May 19 to further intensify the election campaigning of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.


"PM Modi will reach Bhubaneswar at around 7 p.m. on May 19. He is likely to have an hour-long meeting with senior leaders over election-related and other issues at the state headquarters here in the evening.


"On May 20, he will first perform darshan of Lord Jagannath and later hold a roadshow at the Badadanda (Grand Street) of Puri. PM Modi will later leave for Angul where he is scheduled to address a public gathering. He will then address another election meeting at Cuttack before returning to Bhubaneswar," said Odisha unit BJP president Manmohan Samal on Friday.


Meanwhile, the SPG officials held discussions with the commissionerate police and other police personnel regarding security arrangements.


This is the third visit of PM Modi to Odisha for the election campaigning in the last 15 days.
