Haryana Assembly Elections: Incumbent CM Nayab Singh Saini is leading from his Ladwa seat as per the early trends of counting for the Haryana assembly election. Nayab Singh Saini went up against the Congress's Mewa Singh.
Nayab Singh Saini's lead comes as a feeble hope for the BJP which was trailing in double digits in the early trends. A big name from the OBC community, Nayab Singh Saini was a Minister of State in Haryana and handled multiple portfolios. He became the CM hours after the fall of the Manohar Lal Khattar government earlier this year. Although the party said that there would be no change in the CM, Anil Vij hinted that he was open to being the CM.
Nayab Singh Saini, hailing from the Saini community, is the BJP's OBC face in Haryana. The OBC community has been the focus of Rahul Gandhi and the Congress's campaigns across India, including Haryana. Saini is the incumbent MLA from Karnal, which comes under the Grand Trunk Road belt in Eastern Haryana. The GT Road belt has a significant OBC population.
The GT Road belt comprises Ambala Cantt, Ambala City, Ganaur, Gharaunda, Indri, Israna, Jagadhri, Kalka, Karnal, Ladwa, Mulana, Naraingarh, Nilokheri, Panchkula, Panipat City, Panipat Rural, Pundri, Radaur, Rai, Sadhaura, Samalkha, Shahbad, Sonipat, Thanesar, and Yamunanagar
Both Congress and BJP focused on this belt this year. Saini's constituency was changed to Ladwa, which is in the GT Road belt.
The Haryana elections were held in all 90 constituencies of the state and recorded a 67.9% turnout of the total eligible 2,03,00,255 voters.
The BJP had emerged as the single-largest party but fell short of the majority by 6 seats. It managed to form the government with its 40 MLAs and the JJP's 10. Manohar Lal Khattar was sworn in as the CM, while the Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress sat in the Opposition.
Congress, which was once a dominant party in Haryana, fell flat on its face in 2014, losing 25 seats. In 2019, it managed to save grace with 31 seats, but couldn't come to power. The BJP, which got 40 seats, and Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janta Party, with 10 MLAs formed the government in 2019. But the alliance failed right before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
