Days after the poll debacle in Madhya Pradesh which saw the Congress getting caught off guard by a massive BJP storm after ruling the state for 18 years, state chief Kamal Nath has been asked to resign by a disgruntled leadership, news agency PTI reported quoting sources. The Congress leadership is reportedly upset over Nath's remarks against some I.N.D.I.A bloc such as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar over seat sharing as SP asked for four to six seats, the JD(U) only one seat in the state. A proposition turned down by Nath.
Nath is likely to meet party president Mallikarjun Kharge in the evening on Tuesday when he would be asked to resign, sources told the news agency.
The BJP retained power in Madhya Pradesh winning 163 seats out of the 230 while the Congress bagged only 66.
Sources add that the Congress top rung was also upset with Kamal Nath for not meeting party leaders and workers but meeting Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday.
On Monday, Kamal Nath and his son Nakul Nath met Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and congratulated him for the BJP's big win in the state. Even as Nath and Chouhan traded barbs ahead of the recently concluded polls, even Chouhan in aninterview said he only foccused on work. After the result was declared and Congress faced a rout, the Congress veteran met Chouhan and handed a bouquet to him and the duo were seen exchanging smiles.
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party did not spare taking a dig at Congress after the poor show in three states. Responding to Kamal Nath's 'Akhilesh-Vakhilesh' remark on party chief Akhilesh Yadav, SP spokesperson Manoj Singh Yadav said Nath's statement against Yadav was the reason behind the setback to the party in the polls in Madhya Pradesh.
