Telangana Elections 2023: Union Minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy has said that if his party comes to power in the southern state, it will change the name of Hyderabad to 'Bhagyanagar'. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Reddy said that the names of cities like Madras, Bombay and Calcutta have been changed. He said UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma have already confirmed that if BJP comes to power in Telangana, Hyderabad will be renamed as 'Bhagyanagar'.

The literal meaning of Bhagyanagar is a city of fortunes.

"...Madras was renamed to Chennai, Calcutta was renamed to Kolkata, Bombay was renamed to Mumbai, we renamed to Rajpath to Kartavya Path. So, why should Hyderabad not be renamed? Who is Hyder? Do we need the name of Hyder? Where has Hyder come from? I am asking who needs Hyder...Bhagyanagar is its old name, it was renamed during the Nizam rule. We will name it back to Bhagyanagar when we come to power," he said, adding why the same should not be done.

The Telangana BJP chief said Madras was renamed to Chennai not by the BJP but by the DMK government. "What is wrong with changing the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar when Madras has been renamed as Chennai, Bombay as Mumbai, Calcutta as Kolkata, Rajpath as Kartavya Path," he added, quoted PTI.

"We will completely change all those which reflect the slavish mentality if BJP comes to power," he said. Reddy further added that the saffron party would also take the advice of intellectuals on changing the name.

Previously during his poll rallies, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said that Hyderabad should be made ‘Bhagyanagar’, changing its destiny for the better, and Mahabubnagar should be re-established as Palamuru.

Telangana is the only state out of five remaining to vote this year. It will go to polls on Nov 30 while the results will be declared on Dec 3.
