'Yes, If He Wants To Join BJP...': Himanta Says PM Modi Has No Reason To Meet Kharge Otherwise

In a sharp response to Mallikarjun Kharge, Himanta Biswa Sarma said there's no necessity for him to meet PM Modi unless he intends to join the BJP.

After Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking time so that he could explain the grand old party’s manifesto, the Assam Chief Minister, in a sharp response, on Friday said that there was no necessity for Kharge to meet the PM, unless he intended to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"PM Modi can write English and Hindi very well. Their (Congress's) manifesto has been written in these languages. We are saying whatever is written in the manifesto. Why should there be a supplemantary communication? And if you want to say something more, you go and tell people," Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked.

"Why should there be a meeting between Kharge and BJP? If Kharge wants to join BJP then he should come and meet. I will go to his home and escort him, if he wants to join, otherwise, what is the need of his meeting with the Prime Minister," he added.

Kharge had written a two-page letter to Prime Minister Modi, seeking time to personally explain the Congress party’s manifesto, titled ‘Nyay Patra’, for the Lok Sabha elections. In his letter, Kharge stated that the Prime Minister was being misled by his advisors regarding the manifesto’s content.

The letter from Kharge came after Prime Minister Modi criticised the Congress party’s manifesto, accusing it of advocating for the “redistribution of wealth” to “infiltrators”.

In response to PM Modi’s allegations, Kharge accused him of “distorting” and “defaming” the manifesto’s objectives. He further ctiticised PM Mofi for allegedly creating divides by misrepresenting the grand old party’s promises.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary, sharing Kharge’s letter on X, said, “Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ji has just written to the prime minister, saying that he would be happy to meet him to explain the reality of the Congress' 'Nyay Patra', which Mr Modi may have missed in his persistent efforts to distort and defame it”.
